One of the best things you can do for your body and your health is to increase your water intake. Most of us aren’t getting all the water we really need on a daily basis, and increasing our intake offers benefits such as:
- Giving us more energy
- Clearing up skin
- Decreasing aches and pains
- Making us feel fuller, longer
There is a reason more doctors recommend increasing your water intake and why so many athletes swear by it. So why is it so hard to get the water that we need? For most people, it’s just a matter of making a few changes to your daily routine in order to increase your consumption. Here are some smart ways to increase your water intake so you can enjoy all of its amazing benefits.
Use a water enhancer.
Water enhancers can help flavor water without adding unnecessary chemicals, sugars, or any of that other unwanted stuff. Add a few drops of your favorite flavor and you’ll be gulping down water in no time. There are tons of great flavor options out there. You can even put your water enhancer in our pack and attach it to your camelbak to take with you during your outdoor adventures. Our water enhancer gives you the option of drinking plan or flavored water so you can mix it up based on your personal preferences.
Carry a water bottle with you.
If you have water with you all the time, you’ll be more likely to take a swig more often. Get a water bottle that you like to carry and offers the features that you want. Some people prefer metal water bottles while others like plastic or even glass. Pick your personal preference and keep it filled and on you as much as possible. It’s a great thing to keep on your desk at work, too, so you can take a sip when taking a break.
Mark goals on your water bottle.
It’s easy to let the day get away from you without ever thinking about how much water you are actually drinking. One trick to help you monitor the time and your intake is to mark goals on your water bottle. Take a permanent marker and mark off 8 ounces for every hour of your workday. You’ll be getting the roughy ½ gallon of water you should be drinking, all in a day’s work.
Drink one or two glasses with meals.
If you don’t want to drink a glass of water every hour, do it around your mealtimes. Start and end each meal with one or two glasses of water. This will have the added benefit of helping you feel more full, which can actually cut down on your food intake and help you lose weight. If your goal is eight glasses a day, try two glasses before each meal and one glass after, skipping your after dinner glass to help prevent a trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Experiment with flavors.
Some people just don’t like the taste of water. Along with water enhancers, you can experiment with different water flavors by adding fruits and herbs into your water bottle. Try combinations like mint and cucumber or strawberry and eucalyptus. If you are using a plastic water bottle, be aware that some flavors could infuse into the plastic and create more permanent (and not always pleasant!) tastes.
