What Is Wellness?
Wellness is defined as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal” by Webster’s Dictionary. If you’re like me, you might be looking for a more specific definition of wellness. We define wellness as the state of pursuing a life of balanced happiness, health, satisfaction, and well-being–spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Health And Wellness Definition & Importance:
We defined wellness above as the state of pursuing a life of balanced happiness, health, satisfaction, and well-being–spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
We define health as a state of measurable well-being–typically referring to physical, mental, and emotional health.
Why are health and wellness important in our daily lives? While they’re both important individually, health and wellness are also important together. You can have physical health, but if you don’t have a wellness awareness it’s most likely going to be very hard for you to have complete mental and emotional health.
Wellness Vs. Health:
What’s the difference between health & wellness? We explain it like this. You have to have physical health for your body to function. Does that mean you’re at 100% healthy levels and you don’t ever get sick or have problems? No. We’re describing health as your body performing as optimally as it can given extenuating circumstances, like disease, family health history, etc.
You don’t necessarily have to have wellness to live, your body can go on functioning without it. We believe however, that wellness contributes very much so to happiness and quality of life. They go hand in hand because your body has to function for you to pursue health goals and have wellness, and you have to have wellness to have complete mental and emotional health.
Why Is Wellness More Than Just Being Healthy:
Wellness is about more than just being healthy, it’s about a complete state of health and happiness. This can include setting healthy goals that are realistic and attainable for you. Below are some goal ideas to start with like:
- Eating More Fruits And Vegetables
- Going To Bed At A Set Time
- Daily Meditation Routine
- Making Time To Journal
- Reading A Self-Improvement Book
- Spending Less Time On Social Media
- Spending Less Time Using Technology
- Setting Aside Time To Go Outside
- Weekly Exercise Goals/Plans
- Cooking At Home More
- Repairing Broken Relationships
- Joining A New Club
- Gardening In Your Yard
- Making Weekly Social Plans To Look Forward To
- Exploring Proper Hydration And Drinking More Water
- Spend Time Weekly On A Hobby That Makes You Happy
It’s important to remember that health and wellness is going to be different for everyone. If you’re striving for perfection, you’ll never reach it. Instead take an inventory of where your health and wellness is right now. Discuss any medical conditions with a doctor and set goals to improve your well-being with that condition. Explore what you think might make you more happy and set goals to pursue that on a weekly and daily basis. Start with small attainable goals and you can gradually move on to bigger goals as you move forward.
